Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Administration Dr Kennedy Malama has asked Zambians to put the first ever surgical operation of cojoined twins at the Women and New Born Hospital in prayer for it to be successful.
Dr Malama said the twins who have
been under care at the highest health institution for seven months are fit and have now gained necessary weight required to be operated on.
The Surgery to separate cojoined twins -Bupe and Mapalo began today at 1:00 am and was expected to last over eight hours.
The Zambian doctors with different specialties have started the lengthy process of separating seven-month-old conjoined twins with a shared liver from Kawambwa.
The surgical team, lead by Dr. Bruce Vulani, is made up of about 30 staff members, including surgeons, anesthetists,
nurses and a number of surgical and anesthesia residents.
