The Securities and Exchange Commission invites you to participate in this University Essay Competition on the subject matter of Investing in the Zambian Capital Markets.
QUESTION
Give an analysis of the current investment products available on the capital markets in Zambia. Suggest new product characteristics that would be suitable for Zambian investors with regard to the issuers and consumers of these products. How would the suggested products help grow the Zambian capital markets in the next 10 years?
GUIDELINES
The aim of this topic is to demonstrate understanding of the concept of capital markets investments and the financial growth prospects that they offer. This should include identifying different investment options and what factors should be considered when choosing a financial growth product. Additionally, the topic aims at assessing the suitability of current investment options for the Zambian environment with a possibility of recommendations for new products.
ELIGIBILITY
To participate, you must be a student at a registered university in Zambia.
Students are expected to conduct research into the following questions:
• What is investing and how does it relate to financial growth?
• What are the advantages and disadvantages of investing?
• What are the different investment options available in the Zambian capital markets?
• Explain which investment options interest you most and why?
• What factors should one consider when investing?
• Recommend new products for the capital markets that you think would be most appropriate for issuers and investors within the Zambian context. These can be novel product ideas or products from other markets.
REQUIREMENTS
The essay must:
• have a minimum of 1,500 words and should not exceed 2,000 words;
• be clearly typed in font type Times New Roman, font size 12 and spacing 1.5;
• be acknowledged as writers own authentic work and well referenced where need be.

Submitted essays will be reviewed by a panel of markers and the author(s) of the top five essays shall be interviewed by the Panel.
The following prizes will be awarded to the top three winners:
• 1st Prize K10,000.00
• 2nd Prize K 7,500.00
• 3rd Prize K 5,000.00
In addition, winners will be entitled to an internship within the Securities and Exchange Commission. Furthermore, the winning essay(s) will be posted on the Securities and Exchange Commission website and published in the Commission’s bi-annual bulletin.
