THE Zambia Information and Technology Authority (ZICTA) has awarded Unitel International Holdings B.V. a fourth
mobile phone licence.
The Netherlands based mobile service provider will invest US$350 million in Zambia.
Unitel will operate in Zambia under a new outfit registered as UZI Zambia Limited.
In its initial setup UZI Zambia Limited will create 450 direct jobs, according to ZICTA's Corporate Communications
Manager, Ngabo Nankonde.
Ms Nankonde says UZI Zambia Limited and it's major shareholder UNITEL intends to deploy LTE technology countrywide for their network which would fully support 4G and 5G technologies.
She says UZI Zambia Limited would prioritise unserved and under serviced areas across Zambia.
Unitel was formerly known as Jadeium BV.
The company is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and is operated by Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos.
Isabel dos Santos; 45 years old, is currently Africa's richest woman and the eldest child of Angola's former President
José Eduardo dos Santos, who ruled the country from 1979 to 2017.
The company oversees operations of Angolan mobile carrier
Unitel S.A., and other African mobile carriers operating
under the Unitel brand.
