The MISA Media awards are a high profile event which
brings together government leaders, the diplomatic corps,
civil society and the corporate sector who gather to
recognize and celebrate the role that the media plays in
promoting democracy and good governance.

Content: refers to the fact, their accuracy, context and the
background, attribution and multi- sourcing (I.e. the use of a
wide range of information sources to validate substance of
the report and is graded out of 20marks).
Language and style: this deals with the linguistic
organization, coherence and ability to translate jargon into
the lay terms for easy understanding by the public.
Quality of sound and picture: this refers to the degree
of accuracy with which the Producer of a radio or television
programme was able to capture the original emitted sound
waves or environment in which the picture, either motion or
still, was captured using various devices
1. Best Mines Reporting Media Award sponsored by the
Zambia Chamber of Mines
(Print, Radio and TV). This award recognizes the best
reportage in the mining sector. Entries to this award should
include stories detailing the Macroeconomic contributions of
mining, Local-level contributions of mining, Understanding
Taxation and Mining Investment in Zambia. It should also
show the current state of
Zambia’s electricity sector and its cost in relation to the
mining sector. Further the reportage should cover the
perspective Skills and Employment in the Mining sector.
Additionally, the entry should show Efforts by mining
companies to promote Local content, the Mining sector and
its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSRs).
2. Best Reporting: Agriculture and Local Sourcing of raw
materials Media Award sponsored by Zambian Breweries
(Print, Radio and TV). The reportage for this awards can
detail latest high yielding farming methods, how to address
climate change in the agricultural sector, the sector’s role in
providing raw materials to the local industry and growing
trading sector. The stories to the award can also depict
companies that have embraced local sourcing of raw
materials and how this improves livelihoods of farmers and
helps to reduce unemployment and poverty.
3. Best Reporting: Responsible Alcohol Consumption Media Award sponsored by Zambian Breweries (Print, Radio and TV). This award recognizes the best reportage that encourages responsible drinking and seeks to combat alcohol abuse. It also hopes to enhance education about alcohol misuse because alcohol abuse has negative impact at individual, family, community and national levels. The Best Reporting - Responsible Drinking Media Awards will recognize journalistic efforts in encouraging use of alcohol in a responsible and correct manner. It will also recognize stories which highlight sale of alcohol and age appropriateness. Implementation of regulations controlling alcohol use and abuse including analysis of services that assist address alcoholism will also be recognized in this category. Further stories that highlight health problems and burden on the health sector resulting from alcohol abuse should also be highlighted.
4. Best Telecommunications Reporting Media Award sponsored by Zamtel (Print, Radio and TV). This award recognizes reportage that highlights the benefits of the telecommunication in Zambia, seeks to promote access to telecommunication through addressing issues of policy, laws and the economic environment in Zambia.
5. Best Road Safety Reporting Media Award sponsored by Road Transport and Safety Agency (Print, Radio and TV). This category recognizes reporting on Road safety, Road safety rules and articles that encourage road safety. The articles to be recognized should also help educate the general citizenry on the road safety regulations and laws.
6. Best Election Reporting Award sponsored by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (Print, TV, Radio, Online, Community Radio, Electronic image and photojournalism). The entries which could be on election campaigns, political parties’ policies, meetings, rallies and press conferences should be fair and balanced. Stories must also show effort to discuss various registered political parties in Zambia and not just one. They must contain information of the electoral process up to the declaration of results.
The entries must bear an accurate account of happenings or information communicated by the party or candidates. The stories must not make any abusive editorial comment, incite violence or advocate hatred based on race, ethnicity, tribe, gender, sex, political or religious convictions, The stories must be gender aware, or address gender equality/equity.
The award entry must also cover electoral laws in Zambia, role of voters, role of the media in the electoral process, discourage violence during elections including educative information on democracy and how citizens can all participate through sharing ideas. Other aspects that can be covered include the different roles of the government institutions in the electoral process, the role of political parties in peaceful elections and how parties can be held accountable after the elections. Well researched and analytical stories are an added advantage.
Award Rules and Eligibility:
• The Media Awards are open to both private and public media of all forms that publish to the Zambian populace.
• Eligible individuals or institutions should be Zambian.
Entries will be judged by an independent body of judges drawn from well-seasoned media experts and academicians in Zambia who have previously held positions of high esteem in their career.
The right to withhold award prizes is reserved if no entries are considered by the Judges to merit a winner.
Award entrants must show proof of publication of stories submitted for adjudication. This could include a copy or the paper in which the story was published, a signed letter from the media institution confirming publication or a URL to a reputable media publication where the story is appearing. Entries should be clearly marked as to which category is being entered for and the name of the entrant including the organization/media house working for.
All entries must include a one paragraph profile on the individual entering the award. Eligible stories must have been published between 1st January 2017 to 15th April 2018.
