United Party for National Development (UPND) president, Hakainde Hichilema has demanded for the immediate release of all Evelyn Hone College students
from police cells and their grievances listened to, as a way of
resolving issues as opposed to the brutality that they are
being subjected to.
Mr Hichilema indicates that him and some UPND members visited Woodlands Police station yesterday.
“During our visit to the Woodlands Police Station this afternoon, we found a number of students from Evelyn
Hone College who are detained there.
Our findings have shown that there are many more who
have been detained in various detention centers around
Lusaka.
We have been fully briefed that the issue has to do with the
complete breakdown of another government institution,
TEVETA, which is the examining body,” he explains.
He laments that it is totally unacceptable that such a huge number of students could be spending nights in police cells instead of
having their grievances heard and amicably resolved.
“We are alarmed at the continued breakdown of Government
institutions who do not follow due processes but seem to be
there mainly to do this government’s bidding. The police
reacting in such a heavy-handed way towards the students is
uncalled for and has no place in a civilized democracy like
Zambia,” says Mr Hichilema.
Meanwhile, atleast 333 Evelyn Hone students have so far been arrested for staging a riot on Wednesday night outside campus premises.
