University of Zambia Vice Chancellor Professor Stephen Simukanga, The Registrar Kavwanga Yambayamba, Bursar
Barbara Sampa and Chief Librarian Vitalicy Chifwepa have
resigned from their positions.
In a statement made available to the media by Ministry of
Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education,
Dr Patrick Nkanza says deputy Vice Chancellor Professor
Enala Mwase will in the meantime be acting Vice Chancellor,
while positions of Registrar, University Librarian and bursar
will be filled with officers to be appointed to act in the
positions.
Earlier in the week, University of Zambia Lecturers and
Researchers Union (UNZALARU), who have been pressing for
payment of similar outstanding contractual dues, called for
UNZA Vice-Chancellor Stephen Simukanga, Registrar
Kavwanga Yambayamba, Bursar Barbara Sampa and Chief
Librarian Vitalicy Chifwepa to resign.
UNZALARU General secretary Jason Mwanza said four
principal officers, Professor Simukanga inclusive, have
allegedly been paid gratuities and pension dues outside the
university policy.
The policy at UNZA is that gratuity and pension dues should
be paid on the “first-in, first-out” rule whereby members of
staff need to wait for their time regardless of one’s position.
However, the quartet was allegedly paid their dues when
other members of staff have not been paid for as long as 10
years.
Dr Nkanza says the academic and administrative functions
have restored in particular the examination processes will
starts Monday 22 June 2015.
He says the ministry of education will work with all stake
holders to address the problems facing the institutions
especially the problem associated with accrued contractual
obligations.
“The ministry is committed to a process of continuous
dialogue with the management and all staff unions of the
university in order to seek and deliver solutions to the
problems that could hinder the academic and administrative
life of the university. In this process ,all parties share the
common objective of a credible university, with motivated
academic and administrative staff, contributing to the
development of human resources for the advancement of
our country” said Professor Nkanza.
