Copperbelt University Student Union (COBUSU) Publicity Secretary, Pankalamu Simfukwe has issued a statement informing student about the state of affairs they are experiencing at Riverside, Jambo Drive Campus.
“This serves to inform our constituency on the state of affairs we are experiencing at our University, the academic Union for lecturers have vowed not to resume work until their demand is met, they have raised 10 allegations against the Vice Chancellor (VC) and his Team under which they are calling for his resignation together with his team,” says Simfukwe.
Simfukwe explains that the academic Union had written to the Minister of Education who is the appointing authority for the Universities top management to intervene in the matter but the Minister
referred the academic union to dialogue based on mutual respect and norms of acceptable ethical behavior as the
action by the lecturers union exhibited neither respect for the Minister, nor conformity with acceptable standards of
professional conduct.
Adding that during the University Council meeting that took place yesterday, it was resolved that Council should study the
matter and later report to the Minister who will then give the final decision on the matter.
Simfukwe says COBUSU and Students Council of Representatives are Neutral on this matter.
“ We will not support either the VC or the Lecturers but we shall not tolerate this Fracas to go on for a longer time as
it as potential to lead to an indefinite closure which is something that we never want,” he states.
“ We have given them up to monday next week to resolve this issue failure to which, we shall rise and communicate through our usual means and redeem our selves from this fracas,” says Simfukwe.
