Police have observed that the trend of fraudsters creating fake facebook accounts using particulars of prominent people in society advertising some products, services and employment has continued and many people have fallen victim and have lost huge sums of money.
Police Public Relations Officer, Esther Mwaata Katongo indicates that this is evidenced by the increasing number of complaints being received by the Zambia Police.
Ms Katongo says members of the public are therefore advised to be wary of these activities and that they should not be carried away by such adverts.
“In as much as the Police are doing their work in investigating such activities, it is also important, as a preventive measure,
for members of the public to avoid trusting people they do not know on social media who would later steal from them
through deception,” she explains.
She points that members of the public should always be mindful that it is unimaginable for people in senior government positions to demand money from vulnerable persons in need of
employment and this should be a clear indication that those behind such adverts or activities are fraudsters.
“We urge members of the public to always consult relevant authorities such as the police whenever they came across
such advertisements,” says Ms Katongo.
Ms Katongo has since warned perpetrators of this vice to desist from such criminal activities or face the wrath of the law.
“We wish to inform members of the public that the Zambia Police Service has made some arrests where some people have been convicted while other cases are still before the Courts of Law. As a law enforcement agency, we will continue working with other stakeholders to trace and bring
perpetrators to book,” she assured.
