Mating, natural or artificial insemination, is the engine which drives any piggery. Learn to do it well and you are guaranteed of good litter sizes.
1. Always take the female to the
boar and not the boar to the sow. Don't rush, take your time.
2. Clean the vulva well to avoid infection to the sow and boar.
3. Always assist the boar to insert.
4. Rub the female to
release oxytocin for contraction.
5. Be very friendly to your
boar, he performs well in a friendly environment.
6. Allow at
least 4+ minutes after the boar has finished its job.
7. Record
the mating and mark the sow with a marking stick.
8. Take the
sow back to its pen.
9. Repeat after 24 hours
From 4 days after mating to 28 days, its an important period. Its called implantation period where the fertilized eggs are being implanted to the walls of the uterus. Any
stress of any sort will lead to the absorption of the eggs.
10. Make sure the serviced sow is stress free.
