Luckson Sikananu, a 23-year-old Mass Communications
student at the University of Zambia and intern at
Transparency International, originally from Mongu has won
the 2017 Partners Guide Young Zambian Business Journalist
of the Year Competition.
Sikananu, who wrote about what the private sector can do to
encourage women and youths in to agriculture in a topic
provided by MUSIKA, one of the competition's sponsors beat
off stiff competition from Logic Lukwanda, a 29 year old
journalist at Hot FM, who scooped the broadcast category.
The competition was designed by the Partners Guide
Magazine to encourage greater quality and quantity content
about business, economics and developmental issues in the
Zambian media as a way of fostering national development.
The competition was aimed at commentators aged between
18-29 who had a passion for commentating on business
issues and 10 finalists were selected, who attended a week
long intensive journalism training course hosted at the
Embassy of Sweden in Lusaka and delivered by trainers
from Zambia, South Africa, Kenya and the UK and included
several guest talks from leading figures in industry to enable
the finalist to gain a greater insight in to different industries,
their opportunities and their challenges.

On the week's training, contestant Fatima Mawele, a 19 year
old Mass Communications student from Mumbwa said, "this
has been the most productive week of my life. Through the
people I have met this week, I have learned that Zambia has
so much potential to develop if the media was used as a tool
to inform and educate people on things that matter in life."
Following the week's training, a final competition was held at
the offices of deVere Zambia where contestants selected
topics from a pot that were provided by the previous week's
guest speakers and the finalists were given the day to
complete an 800 word print article or 5 minute broadcast
piece.
Following the final, entries were delivered anonymously to a
panel of five expert panel judges who decided by one point
that Sikananu should take the 2017 crown.
The decision was announced on Wednesday 15th November
at an Awards Ceremony at Taj Pamodzi, officiated by
Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Hon Kampamba
Mulenga in the absence of the Vice President, Her Honour
Inonge Wina.
The Partners Guide also launched the pgzambia.com website at the same event as part of their 10th birthday
celebrations.
Sikananu will next year travel to Sweden to visit Swedish
media houses as well as Swedish business with a presence
in Zambia as part of his prize.
