Mwanakatwe becomes second woman in Zambia to hold the post of Minister of Finance | WestMac Media

President Edgar Lungu has transfered Margaret Mwanakatwe to the ministry of finance in the same capacity replacing Felix Mutati and making her the second woman in Zambia to hold the post of Minister of Finance. 

Mr Mutati is now the new Minister of Works and Supply. 


The now opposition leader, president of Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), Edith Nawakwi was the first woman in Zambia to hold the post of Minister of Finance following her appointment in 1998. 

Mrs Mwanakatwe until this transfer was serving as Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry. She worked previously as a businesswoman, accountant, and bank executive. 

Mrs Mwanakatwe was the director for business development in Anglophone Africa at the United Bank for Africa at the bank's headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria. 

In this role, she supervised business development in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.  Before that, Mrs Mwanakatwe served as the managing director and chief executive officer of the United Bank for Africa Uganda Limited from March 2009 until May 2011. 

Born 57 years go, in Zambia Mrs Mwanakatwe went to University of Zambia and persuaded Bachelor of Business Administration degree which she obtained and later went on to study professional studies.

Mrs Mwanakatwe is also a Chartered Certified Accountant, recognized by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants of London. 

According to a statement issued to ZANIS by Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda in Lusaka today, President Lungu has appointed Patriotic Front (PF) Parliamentary Chief Whip Richard Musukwa as the new Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, taking over from Chrisopher Yaluma who has become Minister of Commerce. 

The Head of State has also elevated PF, Deputy Chief Whip Stephen Chungu to the position of Chief Whip while, Mutale Chanda is the new Deputy Chief Whip. 

Mr. Chanda stated that President Lungu has terminated the appointment of Minister of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection Mulenga Kaziya and replaced him with General Education Minister Dennis Waichinga. 

He added that Energy Minister David Mabumba has been taken to General Education and Mathews Nkuwa moves to Ministry of Energy. 

Other changes Mr. Chanda announced are Dora Siliya who has gone to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services taking over from Mulenga Kampamba who is the new Minister of Livestock and Fisheries replacing Micheal Katambo who has gone to the Ministry of Agriculture. 

Mr. Chanda further added that the Head of State has also swapped Copperbelt Minister Bowman Lusambo with his counterpart Lusaka Province Minister Japhen Mwakalombe, while Western Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu has been swapped with North Western Province Minister Richard Kapita. 

The Presidential Spokesman clarified that, the changes are with immediate effect.
