How much money is enough to start a business?

By Anna Vital
It may seem like all the successful startups found funding early on. But is it so? And if yes, how much funding is enough for a startup to take off? How much money is enough to start?

Starting and growing are two different things, though. Even if you can start on $10,000, how much would you need to run a good business?

Top 9 Opportunities For Zambian Youth To Make Money Online

Investing in youth resilience

By Doug Ragan
U.N.-Habitat, has found that investing in youth resilience is critical to the positive development of youth and their communities. Resilience is defined as the ability for young people to cope, adapt to and effect change. If youth are resilient it allows them to overcome difficulties in their lives, something that is critical for youth living in the developing world who are often faced with poverty, limited employment and lack of access to services.

“People say you will be leaders of tomorrow, but you are already leaders of today. I do not want to leave the world in this shape for you; I wish for a better world, better for all, ” said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the Children and Youth conference. A key focus of this conference is increasing the resiliency of youth and their communities.

By Julius Omondi
An innovative Kenyan youth is pioneering an automated technology targeting farmers with limited space in the production of fish, poultry and plants in an effort that is also doubling house hold incomes as well as fostering nutritional levels among families through balanced diet feeding.

The technology dubbed aqua-poultry, is a classic example of how farmers can benefit from the symbiotic relationship of both the plants and animals. It also allows farmers with limited space to tap into the benefits of fish farming as well as poultry.

3 ways to engage, empower and activate environmentally minded youth

By Philippe Cousteau
Problem solving. From games and mystery novels to space exploration and medical science, problem solving is something we humans do, and in many cases we do it very well. When it comes to the problems facing our environment, however, there seems to be a glitch in this fundamental human skill set. While some progress is being made, we often can’t seem to move past the seemingly endless barriers, real or perceived, to solutions and actions that will result in a healthier environment for all of us who call this planet home.

We are stuck in a seemingly endless cycle of trying the same approaches. As the impacts of climate change, pollution and degraded natural resources become more evident with every passing year, the stakes of continued inaction couldn’t be higher; we can’t afford to be stuck.

Owas and Saboi before they divorced
A renowned Movie maker and actor Owas Mwape has walked to freedom after serving part of his 6 months imprisonment.

His Ex-wife Saboi Imboela says everything in Zambia has become so tribal and political.

“I avoided and still avoid to comment on the Owas issue due to it's proximity but I will say this to a few overzealous tribalists who are turning this into a tribal discussion. Some disillusioned people now support or even accept nonsense according to which party or ethnic group one belongs to. That's why Tumfweko was closed by facebook due to lack of proper reasoning and plain stupidity,” she says.

Government has no money for bursaries a 'baseless' excuse, must set better policies

By Moses Pankalamu Sinfukwe
Allow me to add my thought on the above subject in my own personal capacity and not as COBUSU Publicity Secretary.

Its very shameful and disappointing to note that the PF government has continued on its Barbaric behavior of having abnormal extensions to the academic calendar on baseless excuses that government has no money for the bursaries better known as BC, this casual approach of handling tertiary education is very retrogressive, pathetic and should be highly condemned by all because government is always aware of the academic calendars of both UNZA and CBU.

Entrepreneurship Success: What Is Your ‘Passion-to-Action’ Plan?

By Nicole Cober, Esq.
Right now, you may be wrestling with a solid business concept and thinking about how to turn your passion into action. But you’re overwhelmed, confused, and don’t know where to start. Trust me, I understand. I’ve been there. In 2002, I was an attorney who dreamed about opening a day spa and hair salon, yet I didn’t know the first thing about taking my interests to another level. What were the steps that I took to go from thinking about an idea to opening my doors? Simply put, I needed a plan. Here are several steps that will help you create your Passion-To-Action (PTA) Plan:

1. Get management experience in your industry.
You need to understand how a business operates. If you are a stylist, learn about payroll. If you are a baker, take a business management course. One of the things that surprises me about some aspiring entrepreneurs is that they are very knowledgeable about the industry they love (i.e. clothes or cookies), but they haven’t studied the operations of a business. This is a critical step in your PTA plan. The knowledge of the industry is important, but operations are key. If you don’t plan on operating the business, however, make sure you have a partner who is strong in that area.

Meet the Nyamuka Zambia Champions

The high profile Nyamuka Zambia Business Plan Competition was launched on the 17th of March this year, bringing with it a dynamic platform for Zambia’s most innovative entrepreneurs to showcase their business talents. Nyamuka Zambia seeks to unearth a new generation of local business heroes and help them put into place a game plan to grow their enterprises and tap into new markets that the Zambian economy needs. Advancing the Nyamuka cause are five Champions: Oscar Chavula, Emmanuel Chiliufya, Mawano Kambeu, Miyanda Maimbo and Cathy Phiri. All highly successful local entrepreneurs and go-getters, these Champions took investment risks in virtually unexplored areas and have risen to make great strides as well as leave indelible marks in their respective business fields. They are true inspirations for any aspiring Zambian entrepreneur and ideal choices to spread the Nyamuka message.

He said there is need to accelerate youth employment in the construction sector by awarding contracts to youth-led enterprises.

Why Zambia is very civilised?

By Mwamba Peni II
1. Foreigners are accorded more respect, attention and hospitality than natives because from a cultural point of view, we are obliged to treat our visitors the way we would want us to be treated when in a foreign land.

2. Zambian's don't mind foreigners owning shops anywhere within the boarders. Hence you have some Asians selling even in open markets without trouble. The mind set of a Zambian is that how you make your money or your nationality is your business, just don't bother them.

Youth Appointments Welcome

Young people in any country represent the future of that country. They have a vital role to play in the development of the country, a duty they must perform. However, to ensure the active participation of young people in national development, they need to be supported and encouraged by the government, the private sector, the civil society and even their parents.

One does not need to belabour the point that there are many young people who, if given the required support, can contribute meaningfully to national development. But bringing such youths aboard the development wagon becomes the responsibility of those in authority.

In a statement made available to WM Media Pty. Ltd, Zambia Open Society foundation Executive Director, Obbious Chikombola said this has derailed many people of fair trial and justice through exaltation of all court procedures and process.

Mr Chikombola said it is said in the preamble to the United Nations Declaration of human rights Charter that “Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people. Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law.”

Entrepreneurship, a viable option for Zambians

By Mawano Kambeu
The now famous ‘UNZA 6’ graduates who protested about the lack of employment in the country and were subsequently arrested, have created a heated debate in Zambia around employment, the role of government in job creation and entrepreneurship. This topic has clearly divided the country with many hurling insults and criticisms at the graduates, and others coming to their defence.

In all this, the bigger picture is being lost as the UNZA 6 represent any trained and skilled youth out there that has had education and training, but can’t find employment to apply or develop those skills in their chosen field. There is nothing wrong with standing up and demanding more from your leaders and asking for them for improvement, done the right way of course than an impromptu demonstration.
