Support for SMEs critical for inclusive growth - HH

United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema says president Lungu's acknowledgment of the importance of increasing access to banking services for stimulating business activity and development was most welcome and on this UPND could not agree more. 

However, HH has alleged that president Lungu must recognise that Government’s actions have had a strongly negative impact on the ability of Zambian Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) to access these services and unlock the benefits.

Faith Kandaba put to rest

Hundreds of mourners gathered today (yesterday) to bid a farewell to a national broadcaster journalist, Faith Kandaba who died last week. 

Ms Kandaba, 40, who was born to Simon Kenneth Kandaba and Rosemary Lunda on June 27, 1975 in Kitwe died on Tuesday, February 24 after an illness at the University Teaching Hospital was put to rest on February 27 at the Memorial Park in Lusaka.

Lusaka youth bashes traffic cop close to death

A Lusaka female traffic officer is nursing serious injuries after being hit close to death by a PSV driver today (yesterday). 

Eye witness told WM Media that an officer only identified as Marjory Moyo as per traffic operation stopped a Toyota Hiace bus registration number ALJ 7248 with a view to checking the certificate of fitness. 

Finalists for 2016 Commonwealth Youth Awards announced

A male reproductive rights activist and a social entrepreneur helping small farmers to access credit are among the 17 youth leaders named as finalists for the prestigious 2016 Commonwealth Youth Awards for Excellence in Development Work. 

The awards recognise outstanding young people under the age of 30 from Commonwealth countries whose work has significantly contributed to local, national, regional and global development. Over 300 nominations were received this year.

UNZASU rubbishes ZANASU apology statements

University of Zambia Student Union (UNZASU) president Jones Mwewa has dispelled apology statements issued by Zambia National Student Union (ZANASU) on behalf of UNZASU. 

He says ZANASU has in past week, in particular on February 18th and 19th, purported to act as UNZASU mother-body by issuing misplaced, misleading, and contradictory statements in the Zambia Daily Mail paper and The Post Newspaper respectively.

UNZA, CBU students receives part payment after protesting

The students of the higher learning institutions: University of Zambia (UNZA) and Copperbelt University (CBU) have received part payments of their delayed meal allowances after protesting. 

Earlier today (yesterday), Government sponsored students were credited half of their delayed meal allowances, UNZA students having received K1,190 for term two which comes to an end on 9th April 2016. And CBU students received K1, 350 for term three.

Policy experts look ahead to 2016 Youth Development Index

The Youth Development Index, which charts the social, political and economic situation for young people in 170 countries, has been welcomed by a high-level panel of policy experts - ahead of the launch of its 2016 edition. 

Over 20 leading experts from the United Nations, OECD and World Bank, among other organisations, met at the Commonwealth Secretariat’s headquarters at Marlborough House in London last week to review the next iteration of the ground-breaking index, first published in 2013.
