University of Zambia Student Union (UNZASU) president Jones Mwewa has dispelled apology statements issued by Zambia National Student Union (ZANASU) on behalf of UNZASU.
He says ZANASU has in past week, in particular on February 18th and 19th, purported to act as UNZASU mother-body by issuing misplaced, misleading, and contradictory statements in the Zambia Daily Mail paper and The Post Newspaper respectively.
In a statement made available to WM Media, Mr Mwewa says the stories published by the said newspapers under the headlines “UNZA, CBU Students Sorry” and “Si University Ya Nyoko-Students tell Kaingu” did not represent UNZASU.
“We highly condemn such actions by ZANASU and urge its supposed leaders to desist from issuing statements on behalf of UNZASU-an autonomous body capable of solving its own problems,” Mr Mwewa warns.
Mr Mwewa says in the past UNZASU used to be an affiliate of confederation student unions called ZANASU.
“You may wish to know that affiliation to ZANASU was by free consent and did not in any way take away the autonomy of students unions. In 2013 UNZASU disassociated itself from ZANASU. As such it is not bound by ZANASU regulations and ZANASU is not a mother-body of UNZASU,” he explains.
Mr Mwewa has since said the misplaced, misleading and contradictory statements by ZANASU were uncalled for, unfounded, and embarrassing.
“We hope and trust that ZANASU will heed to our instructive admonition and act accordingly,” adding that ZANASU should retract its statements which were calculated to injure and ruin the reputation and stature of UNZASU and the greater student populace it represents.
