YOUR VOICE MATTERS: Employment Freeze Not The Solution

By Bertha Kalongelwa
To my fellow Youth and Comrades, this opinion is not about PF, FDD, UPND, NAREP or any Party, its not about those employed or those unemployed. It’s about We the Youth Speaking for each other.

I was privileged to be educated at UNZA and believe me I have more to offer the economy than selling tomatoes. I was not the brightest in class but my heart is saddened when I look at the many brains I sat with at UNZA with so much to offer stuck because Zambia has an employment freeze. Past experience has shown clearly that indiscriminate freezing of all civil service positions has the debilitating effect on the overall performance of the government machinery.

Do We Really Value Our Jobs in Zambia?

By Brian Mulenga
Failure to get a job is not always the Government's fault. I can attest as someone who does job interviews the really poor quality of graduates coming out of our colleges and Universities.

First of all let us understand one another here, jobs are not anybody's right. The only reason why someone is employed by any organization is because they can add value to that organization.

Second, organizations do not employ paper qualifications they employ people with the skills profile to enable them to meet their objectives.

Third, organizations especially profit making ones are looking for performers and not conformers.

Mind-set Change:State Of Youth Unemployment And Proposed Solution

By Dalitso Mbewe
When life throws you tomatoes, make ketchup!!!

What are the issues at hand?
1. University students and Wage Freeze The government introduced the wage freeze only after they more than doubled salaries for all low level civil servants and gave artisans and blue collar service providers a decent living; only after, they introduced a tax free threshold of initially K 2000 and progressively K 3000 to give a chance to low income earners to earn a decent living for once.

Changing The Way We Think About Mental Health

By Jen Hyatt
When we have the flu, a fever, or other physical ailment, or are diagnosed with a serious disease like cancer or diabetes, what do we do? Many seek immediate help from a physician or other specialty clinician, and many receive encouragement from family, friends, and employers to approach their illness with vigor.

Kaingu Not Fit To Be Minister of Education, Daughter Not A Cultured Young Lady Says CHILUFYA TAYALI

Zambian Voice Executive Director, Chilufya Tayali has said, it is the prerogative of the President to choose who he thinks is capable of being a minister, however, he say he reserve the right to pass his comment.

Mr Tayali says, he was shocked when he heard that Kaingu had been appointed as Minister of Education.

“Firstly, I did not understand the connection of Kaingu to the Patriotic Front (PF). I never saw Kaingu campaigning for Edgar Lungu. The only time I saw him close to the PF is when he revolted against Dr Nevers Sekwila Mumba,” he says.

“I Sold Fritters And Toy Drinks Out of Choice”

By Patrick Sikana
I am angry at two women. Stella and Stella. In case you missed it, I will tell you why. A group of 6 harmless, jobless graduates from the University of Zambia staged a peaceful demonstration to express their wish to be employed. One Stella, the police IG, sent a group of excited bat-wielding police officers to savage their freedoms of expression and assembly, and lock them up. In solidarity with that high- handed tantrum, another Stella, this time the daughter of a former president, with savage eloquence and polished sarcasm, taunted the jobless6 (as they are colloquially known) on her Facebook wall, urging them to shut up, feed their placards to the fire and proceed to the market to sell tomatoes.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: “Never touch anything with half of your heart”

By Rolf Rosenkranz
It was an image that spoke volumes: On the fringes of last August’s U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, President Barack Obama welcomed heads of state to dinner at the White House. Most of the dignitaries brought their wives. Paul Kagame didn’t.

The Rwandan president arrived with Ange Kagame, his only daughter, a now 21-year-old budding philanthropist who, in many ways, represents the next generation of promising African leaders — a generation that stands ready to shape a continent ripe with opportunity despite its long history of poverty, conflicts and other development challenges.

Youth unemployment 'a time bomb'

By Obbious Chikombola
Youth Unemployment is indeed a time bomb that is waiting to explode before our very own eyes if concerted efforts is not channeled toward it. This we all agree and attest to it through the pronouncement we have made time and again reminding the government to address this scourge of our time. Youth Unemployment is indeed a continental problem in general but the strides made thus far is what we the youths want to see. We have called on government to give us the youth employment action plan which they promised so of high.

We also found that out of every 10 youths, two have attempted to start a business but failed. Would You Date OR Marry Someone Who Has a Child?

By Atoke
Some time in the early 90s, one of my cousins got pregnant while she was in Yaba Tech. From my young eyes, it must have been a very serious issue because my relatives started arriving from Ogbomosho. There were plenty hush-hush meetings but the curiosity of a child should not be underestimated. I remember that one of the issues an older aunt had was the fact that she had reduced her chances of finding a good man to marry her now that she had gotten pregnant. It really struck me as odd because as a young girl, I didn’t understand why having a baby would reduce one’s chances of having a happily-ever-after.

Democracy Is Not a Theological Concept Says SABOI IMBOELA

A Lusaka based political scientist, Saboi Imboela has said that democracy is not a theological concept instead it is a political concept.

She says the way people mix concepts is amazing.
“Democracy is not a theological but political/human concept.” She says.

Ms Imboela says to say a leader is chosen by God when people are the ones who go to vote for themselves is a clear mix of the will of God over leadership.
“The leaders who God chose in the Bible were really chosen by him. That's why some churches don't vote. So people should blame themselves for their poor choices, its not God's will, but peoples will.”Ms Imboela says.

“Nobody Should See Your Menses, It Is Taboo”

Taking advantage of a morning break between classes in Buteba, Uganda, then-13-year-old Lucy Athieno set off to play with friends. Then she heard some boys shouting at her. She looked down and saw a blotch of red on her otherwise clean uniform. Embarrassed, she quickly sat down. It was the only way to stop the boys from making fun of her.

After all the other students had gone, she got up and went home. She did not return to school.

Many girls in low-income communities drop out of school when menstruation begins because they lack information and hygienic material to use.

Days went by before Athieno shared her experience with her late mother’s friend. The woman told her to continue using rags and to throw them away after use. She said, “Nobody should see your blood. It is taboo.”

Exclusive Interview on GBV with Roydah Ndhlovu

YOUR VOICE MATTERS: We feature Roydah Ndhlovu popularly known as Tariah Matthews. She is an upcoming gender activist and singer.

WM: Tell us a bit about GBV. What is it?
Roydah: GBV is the violence that is directed against a person on the basis of gender, it constitutes a breach of the fundamental rights of life, liberty, security, dignity and equality. It reflects inequalities between men and women.

WM: Often time’s people use the term GBV, while others use violence against women. Could you tell us the difference?
Roydah: There is a difference in the terms and the terminology matters, narrowing the language in the preamble to violence against women and vulnerability of women represents a step backward, it does not include all forms of violence that must be covered...GBV relates to social expectations and positions based on gender and can be committed by and aimed at both men and women though mostly GBV is committed by men directed against women and girls.
