Save Environment and People Agency (SEPA), Chief Executive Officer Mailes Zulu Muke says Government should quickly disburse sanitary towels to schools in rural areas.
Ms Muke has alleged that walking long distances, attending to house chores and renting houses out of school and lack of sanitary towels contribute to girl child poor performance in school.
She said a study has revealed that the girl child misses 48 days of school in a year due to the lack of sanitary towels.
Ms Muke added that it was also discovered that some girls, especially those in hard to reach areas use dirty linen and leaves during their menstruation period.
Ms Muke pointed that SEPA has partnered with Gozanga University based in the United States of America to provide
sanitary towels to girls in rural areas.
She said for five years now, the University has been donating soap, underwear and pads.
Ms Muke said the sanitary towels given last for three years if used properly and says they will now try to make them locally so that other girls can also benefit.
Ms Muke also appealed to well-wishers to come on board and help keep the girl child in school.
SEPA is an organisation that looks at environmental issues and the welfare of the girl child.
