The National AIDS Council (NAC) has stressed the need for
every Zambian to sensitize the youth on HIV because they
are the most affected.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, NAC
Director of policy and Planning John Mwale noted that HIV
related activities need to continue so that many lives
especially the adolescents are saved.
And NAC Director expressed happiness
with the introduction of the Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PREP)
prevention intervention which does not only boosts immune
system but also strengthen the white blood cells as well as
preventing the virus from spreading fast in body.
Mwale revealed that an estimated 46,000 new HIV related
infections every year are recorded and he believes that the
new drug dubbed PREP which found in all the 10 provinces
of Zambia will reduce the number of infections.
“This is why awareness needs to be spread down to the
community. Discordant couples (a couple that one mate is
living HIV positive and the other is Negative) and sexual
workers are at a very high risk of contracting HIV noting that
PREP will greatly help them. For one to get the treatment,
they must take an HIV test to be sure of their status after
which tests will be regular every 3 months while taking
PREP,” Mwale said
