Youths challenged to be Mps

Greyford Monde
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Greyford Monde Government says it is saddening that the percentage of young people’s representation in parliament is very minimal against the huge population of the youth.

Fisheries and Livestock Minister Greyford Monde says young people shunning national responsibility is among several contributing factors to low youth representation in Parliament.

Mr. Monde says lack of empowerment for aspiring youth is also a setback.

He was speaking during a media briefing for the Inter-Parliamentary Union-IPU- meeting in Lusaka today.

Mr. Monde also noted that the high nomination fees for those standing for political office is another factor contributing to low youth participation in parliamentary business.

And Mufumbwe Member of Parliament Steven Masumba has called on Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ to reduce the nomination fees to allow a number of young people aspiring for parliament to do so.

Meanwhile, IPU President Saber Chowdhury said there is need for young people to be at the centre of the sustainable development agenda.
