Women from Nalituba area in
Ngo’nga ward in Choma district says they are tired of walking long distance for
them to seek medical attention.
Edina Moono of the same
area says women have to walk about 28 kilometres to the nearest clinic which
located in Mbabala area for them seek to medical attention.
She says most women end up
giving birth on their way to the clinic which is not supposed to be the case.
Ms Moono says the area has
no clinic making it difficult for people to seek attention immediately when it
is needed.
She says the challenging of
not having a clinic in the area has taken away the pride of womanhood as they
give birth in the open like in roads.
Ms Moono says poor road
network is also one of the major contributors in making women give birth in the
roads as the vehicles cannot pass once it rains.
She says it is difficult
for a woman with Labour pains to walk a distance of more than 20 kilometres for
her to seek medical attention.
Ms Moono further stated
that lack of a clinic in the area is promoting maternal mortality rate because
in most cases untrained women help with the delivery services.
She says government should
come to rescue of women by building a clinic as soon as possible.
Ms Moono says if the
government can build a clinic in the area then the number women dying while
giving birth will reduce as professional medical personal will always be
available for help women when need arises.
And when contacted for a
comment Mbabala area Member of Parliament Ephraim Bbelemu said he is aware of
the clinic challenge in Ngo’nga ward.
Mr Bbelemu said plans to
put up a health post are under way.
He confirmed that people
walk long distances for them to access medical attention which is not supposed
to be the case.
