Government has announced the opening date for both University of Zambia (UNZA) and Copperbelt University (CBU) which were closed indefinitely.
However, Governments pronouncement to abolish meal allowances at UNZA and CBU has been received with mixed feelings.
In a ministerial statement to parliament yesterday Minister of Higher Education Michael Kaingu said meal allowances will not be given to Government sponsored students. He said meal allowances cause protests which leads to riots.
Dr Kaingu also disclosed that both UNZA and CBU will open on or around 10th April on conditions that all students should sign a commitment form that they will not involve themselves in riot.
He added that all students on bursary will be surcharged for the damaged caused during the riots.
Dr Kaingu stated that all identified riot "ring leaders" should be expelled, adding that security measures on both universities should be stepped up to regulate people who get in/out of the institutions.
He further stated that if the two universities will not comply with the stated conditions, they will not be opened.
Dr Kaingu has since given a directive to the deans of students to put measures for dialogue to avoid riot.
