UNZA 'moma' dies in a traffic accident

A University of Zambia student identified as Adessy Karen Banda has died.

She died on Thursday afternoon in a road traffic accident. 

Adessy was a model and second year student studying towards a Bachelors degree in Mass Communication.

Kantolomba is a shanty compound located on the outskirt of Ndola district. Gethsemane Mwizabi of Times of Zambia describes Kantolomba as “a place of many contrast and contradiction. Like a rocking chair, it is a busy place. Men and women, boys and girls and children alike crowd every corner. Some lineup to draw water and others simply crowd shebeens. With high unemployment level, poverty, HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancies, this township knew very little about development until now.”

Pupils in senior Chief Kalabamukosa’s area prefers fishing to school

Only six grade seven pupils at Musenga Primary School in senior Chief Kalabamukosa’s area in Samfya wrote their examinations last year as many of them opted to join their parents in the fish camps.

Samfya district education board secretary George Mwangula who confirmed this in an interview, said fishing has had a detrimental effect on school attendance.

Over our dead bodies, Mazabuka DC told

Mazabuka district commissioner Jenny Chirwa has angered councilors in Chief Mwanachingwala, by suggesting that the culverts that have been lying along the Simwaaba-Kalama road will be used on other roads where people urgently need better roads. 

Ms Chirwa told the councilors that the culverts have been left unattended to for a long time, wasting public resources.

Malaria ravages Mukinge girls

More than half of the pupils at Mukinge Girls Mission Secondary School in Kasempa district of North-Western Province have been diagnosed and treated for malaria since schools opened in January this year. 

Mukinge Girls Mission Secondary School head teacher Dickson Mtonga said out of 732 pupils, 385 have been treated for malaria.

Kasama traffic accident claims six lives

A Toyota Corolla Registration Number ABE 608, yesterday in Kasama hit into a Tanzanian registered Volvo truck that was coming from the opposite direction. 

And Police spokesperson Charity Munganga Chanda has confirmed that six people in a Corrolla died on the spot.

APPLY: UNESCO-IHE Roth Fellowships 2016 for Short Courses for Female Water Professionals from Sub-Saharan Africa

Deadline: April 15, 2016 
The Roth Family Foundation offers three fellowships per year for UNESCO-IHE Short Courses related to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation, to female water professionals from Sub-Saharan Africa. 

The programme will cover three consecutive years and starts in 2016. Interested female candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa who meet UNESCO-IHE’s admission criteria, are advised to register as soon as possible. 

HRC acts to protect 'rights' of two youths who were suspected of shoplifting at Jet Stores

The commission has strongly condemned acts of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment of two females who were suspected of shoplifting at Jet Stores at Presidential Housing Initiative (PHI) Shopping Mall in Lusaka.

Jet Stores management at Levy mall in Lusaka has been applauded at the same time condemned by the general public for drenching two Lusaka ladies (identities withheld) with paint after they were accused of shoplifting. 

One, between the two youths who were accused of shoplifting at Jet Stores yesterday is alleged to be a Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) presenter.

Andrew Kamanga is new FAZ boss

Andrew Kamanga has been elected as president of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) replacing Kalusha Bwalya after polling 163 out of 324 votes cast. 

The announcement by Chairman of the Electoral Commission Sikwana Lukangaba was met with jubilation at Moba Hotel, as Kamanga prepares to be at the helm of Zambia's football governing body for four years.

Govt to introduce rotary clubs

Sports Minister Vincent Mwale says government intends to introduce rotary clubs for sports associations.

Mwale says this is to ensure that all sports disciplines have money in reserve.

Speaking in Lusaka, Mwale said only a small percentage of the national budget is allocated to sports associations and government cannot provide all funds.

He said rotaries will help provide funds needed for sports activities.
Mwale explained that the rotaries will be funded by the corporate world or individuals.

NGOCC condemns stripping of girl during Youth Day

The Non-Governmental Organizations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has condemned in the strongest terms the violence and the stripping naked of an opposition girl by cadres of the Patriotic Front (PF) at the Freedom Statue on Saturday, 12th March 2016 during the commemoration of the International Youth Day. 

In a statement made available to WM Media, NGOCC Board Secretary, Rachel Chakalashi stated that the act by the ruling party cadres to undress the girl in public was not only criminal but barbaric and evil only reminiscent in lawless societies.

Public workers eyeing political offices told to resign

State House has announced that all public service workers who have applied to contest for political office in the August 11, 2016 general elections must immediately disengage from the Civil Service. 

In a statement monitored by WM Media Special Assistant to the President for press and public relations Amos Chanda stated that the directive by His Excellency Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu President of the Republic of Zambia is intended to protect the integrity and impartiality of the Civil Service as it implements government programmes before, during and after the elections.

Sweden launches new fund to bring clean energy to one million Zambians

The Government of Sweden, Power Africa and the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) last week announced the launch of the Power Africa: Beyond the Grid Fund for Zambia, an ambitious new market-based undertaking to bring clean energy access to one million Zambians and accelerate private sector growth in energy generation and distribution in the country. 

The Fund will “act as a catalyst for sustainable growth in this dynamic and up-and-coming economy,” said Sweden’s Ambassador to Zambia, Henrik Cederin, who hosted a reception at Swedish Embassy in Lusaka with over sixty industry and related stakeholders.

Commonwealth conference spotlights youth work as accelerator of development

Youth work is a “catalyst” for youth development and is “anchored in the belief that young people are a force for peace, democracy and equality”, South Africa’s Deputy Minister with responsibility for youth affairs has said, opening the Commonwealth Conference on Youth Work, in Pretoria. 

“Youth work cannot take place without effective youth workers. Youth development cannot be taken seriously if youth work is also not taken seriously,” stated Buti Manamela, Deputy Minister of the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation.

A Kitwe based youth and ICT guru Michael Sinkolongo says Zambians are very much capable of making 'apps' like whatsapp unfortunately they mistrust their own products. 

Mr Sinkolongo who is also creator of 'Twishe' - a social networking app says if a Zambian made an app like whatsapp, Zambians themselves would shoot it down as error prone, sluggish and insecure, even if it is because they are using platforms that are too old to support.
