Renowned child rights activist Graca Machel has attributed
the high levels of child marriages in Africa to poverty.
Speaking during a media briefing today organized by
UNICEF, Ms Machel said children from vulnerable families
are at high risk of being married off at a tender age, because
their parents cannot afford to provide them with decent
livelihoods.
Ms Machel who is also founder of the Graca Machel Trust,
revealed that 15,000 children drop out of school annually
due to pregnancy.
She said the vice has to be curbed immediately in order to
protect the girl child.
Ms Machel added that the onus is on the African
governments to increase education opportunities for the girl
child.
