A team of Zambian youths
tagged Team A and B which participated in a 2016 RoboRAVE international
robotics competition in New Mexico, USA emerged fourth and fifth in the
competition which took place on the 7th May, 2016.
Team B took fourth position
while Team A took the fifth position and a certificate was awarded to the
Zambian team for fourth position.
RoboRAVE international is a
competition for teams of school-aged pupils and students who have designed,
built, and programmed an autonomous robot.
In an interview with WM
Media, Simon Situmbeko - participant says the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places were taken
by Americans with team names tagged as Cafe, Dustie and T-N-T respectively.
He adds that RoboRAVE (Robots
Are Very Educational) aims to enhance science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics education through academic competitions, support of student
research, and teacher professional development.
This year, the competition
attracted over 700 students from around the world.
Mr Lawrence Tembo from David
Kaunda National Technical Secondary School, led the Zambian team and says the
pupils that formed a Zambian team comprised of four boys and four girls namely:
Mulenga Mumba, Ezra Chikamba, Daniel Chikamba, Simon Situmbeko, Agape Foh
amoaning, Ruth Banda, Joy Mukasa and Dorcas Chilundika.
Mr Tembo says RoboRAVE
international robotics competition was a great opportunity and wonderful experience
that will linger in his life and the children's memories.
“The exercise was and is
fulfilling we learnt a lot as we got exposed to even new methods of how and
what to program robots for. To all Zambians we should not wait for tomorrow, the
future is now. Let us implement the ideas we have now. Technology is here to
stay. Yes, there is a lot to sacrifice,” he says.
Mr Tembo has since urged
everyone especially the parents to support projects such as this one for the
betterment of our mother Zambia.
“Activities of this nature
keep the youngsters off bad vices such as drug abuse. God bless our Country
Zambia,” he emphasized.
This opportunity was made
available to the Zambian team by the Albuquerque Sister Cities Foundation.
