Three children in Chief Mwanachingwala’s area in Mazabuka district of Southern Province have died in an inferno.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Gideon Phiri confirmed the incident in an interview with ZANIS in Mazabuka this morning.
Mr. Phiri named the three deceased children as Elizabeth Mwelwa aged 7, Charles Habulongo aged 3 and Sarah
Habulongo aged 5, all of Shakapinga fishing camp in Mazabuka district.
He disclosed that the two children died instantly in an infernal while Sarah Habulongo died from severe body burns as she was being taken to Mazabuka General hospital.
Mr. Phiri said the incident occurred last night around 22:00 hours when fire swept through a makeshift shop where the
three children were sleeping.
He explained that according to police investigations in the area, the fire was sparked by a candle that was left burning
in the shop at the time the children went to sleep.

Mr. Phiri said the family of the deceased children refused to conduct a post-mortem as they did not suspect any foul play
