Financial Sector Deepening Zambia (FSDZ) is seeking to support the large-scale promotion of high quality Savings
Groups (SGs) in Zambia.
SGs are community-based groups of between 15 and 25 people who meet weekly and deposit savings that are then used by the SG as a loan fund from which all members have a right to borrow money for up to three months, in amounts that are 3 times greater than their savings.
SGs are very popular with more than 300,000 groups in 75 countries worldwide – most of them in Africa. They have proven to be sustainable and profitable and are now getting to be quite well-known in Zambia, where a number of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have
adopted the model.
Groups have traditionally been trained by the staff of NGOs.
Increasingly, however, they are trained by Community Based Trainers (CBTs), who are often selected from among the SG members for their mastery of SG procedures and their commitment.
Experience has shown that excellent trainers are the key to successful SGs.
To form master trainers, able to train CBTs to also be excellent trainers, FSDZ has created a Master Trainer Programme, run by the top international experts on SGs
(Hugh Allen and Andrew Mnjama).
