The demand for the recently introduced farmers start-up grant by the opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) party seem to be high as most farmers want to have access to them.
FDD introduced grants meant to empower small scale farmers with a view to moving them from small scale to subsistence and from subsistence to commercial farmers.
And small scale farmers in Chikankata have asked FDD President Edith Nawakwi to extend her party farmers start-up grant to their area.
Headmen from 10 villages gathered and waited for hours to present their challenges to Ms. Nawakwi after they heard that she would be in Mulando village to monitor the delivery of Soya Bean seed to women from 10 cooperatives in Chikankata.
Speaking on behalf of other headmen in Chikankata, Simuyandi village headman, Osborn Mwanza asked the opposition leader to come to their aid as hunger will be inevitable if no one helped the small scale farmers in the area.
“We heard that you were coming to meet women from our villages and we decided to gather and wait for you because we have heard that your party is helping small scale
farmers,” said Mr. Mwanza.
And responding to the headmen, FDD President Edith Nawakwi urged them to be proactive.
Ms. Nawakwi also advised them not to entirely depend on the Government instead they should devise plans and use alternative sources of manure such us cow dung.
The opposition leader was in Chikankata to monitor how the FDD farmers start-up grants project which she launched last month was progressing.
Women of Mulando, Mulezema, Mweene, Kagoka, Hamunleala, Kasas, Kalinda, Nyaadu Choongo, Haachamba and
Simuyandi will benefit from the grant in Chikankata, Southern Province.
