Patriotic Front (PF) and United Party for National Development (UPND) youths in Luanshya have come together and formed a group consolidating calls by President Edgar Lungu to stump out political violence ahead of the August 11 general elections.
Group Chairperson, Jerry Kalande, said the 22-member group called Tikondane is aimed at creating awareness on youth participation in politics and electoral violence through the use of poetry and drama.
Kalande said as ambassadors of peace the group will engage in various plays, songs and poetry that will be conducted in
various parts of the district to uphold unity and eliminate
violence.
He explained that the group has written a play in titled
“Political Violence” which outlines the various consequences
of political violence such as civil war, imprisonment, damage
to property, injury and death.
Kalande, who condemned electoral violence, noted that
youths played a vital role in the electoral process and that it
was unfortunate that most youths were used to perpetrate
the vice.
He noted that youths have the potential to influence positive
change and that there was need to employ their attention to
productive and the peace-building cause.
Kalande said the formation of the group follows the
recently-held prayer meeting where both President Lungu
and opposition leaders buried their difference in opinion
and agreed on eliminating electoral violence.
He has since appealed to stakeholders to come on board
and partner with the youth group in the district for an issue-
based and violence-free campaign and election.
Recently, the Church called for a meeting where all political
players met and agreed on stumping out violence as one of
the many strides aimed at ending electoral violence ahead
of the August 11 general elections.
