K60, 000 RTSA penalty fee sparks controversy

The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has notified the public that the penalty when convicted for failure to change motor vehicle ownership is K60, 000. 

“RTSA is hereby reminding members of the public that it is a requirement under the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002 that registered owners of motor vehicles and holders of Drivers Licences notify the Agency within fourteen days upon change of contact details or address and ownership of the motor vehicle,” reads the statement in part. 

Cabinet approves policy on climate change

Cabinet has approved the draft National Policy on Climate Change 2016 and the 2016 – 2020 Implementation Plan. 

Chief Government Spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili says approval was made at the 8th Cabinet Meeting held on 26th April, 2016.

Govt recommends constable Marjory Moyo for a new rank as sergeant

The minister of home affairs Davies Mwila has recommended a traffic police officer, Marjory Moyo for a promotion from Constable to Sergeant following her unfortunate accident where she sustained serious injuries while on duty. 

In February this year, Ms Moyo was bashed by a speeding Toyota Hiace minibus registration number ALJ 7248 at Lusaka's Marsharlands area.

Luanshya woman in police custody for inserting grains of sand in her “rivals” Vagina

A Luanshya woman only identified as Kunda Grace has been arrested for disorderly conduct and indecent assault says Copperbelt province commissioner of police Charity Katanga. 

Ms Katanga has confirmed that Ms Kunda of house number 178/27 Mpatamatu township together with other boys assaulted a 47year old woman of the same area by way of inserting sand in her genitals after suspecting her of having an adulterous affair with her husband.

Clean market environments: Zambia's traders need

Nothing is more basic to life than having sustainable access to food, clean air and water, and other resources that ecosystems provide. Surely a clean and healthy environment upon which life itself depends should be recognized as a fundamental human right.

A clean environment that includes clean air, water, land and energy, is essential for human existence, conducting business and creating wealth. These components must be sustained through conservation and proper management. 

Additionally, by-products of human activity should be separated from man at the sanitary level the cleaning process provides. From the start of civilization, man has been the only species that cleans its environment, albeit for the sake of survival.

Despite Government having launched the keep Zambia clean campaign in 2007, the momentum of the programme has slowed down and most market environments are dirty.

LCC condemns underage drinking, warns guardians to refrain from sending their underage children to buy alcohol on their behalf

Lusaka City Council (LCC) Public Relations Manager has urged parents and guardians to play a critical role in curbing underage drinking. 

In an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr. Habeenzu Mulunda disclosed that parents and guardians have the responsibility of ensuring that their children do not abuse alcohol.

Luanshya PF, UPND youths condemn violence

Patriotic Front (PF) and United Party for National Development (UPND) youths in Luanshya have come together and formed a group consolidating calls by President Edgar Lungu to stump out political violence ahead of the August 11 general elections. 

Group Chairperson, Jerry Kalande, said the 22-member group called Tikondane is aimed at creating awareness on youth participation in politics and electoral violence through the use of poetry and drama.

Linda Kasonde becomes the first woman to be elected as President of LAZ

Linda Kasonde has been elected as President of the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) at the Annual General Meeting held on Saturday, 16th April, 2016 at the Avani Victoria Falls Resort (former Zambezi Sun International Hotel), in Livingstone. 

She becomes the first woman to be elected President of LAZ. 

Ms Kasonde has served in various capacities in LAZ from an ordinary member, honorary secretary and was until now deputizing George Chisanga.

Govt to deploy 200 new teachers

The Ministry of Higher Education has conducted a fresh recruitment exercise for teachers to fill over 200 vacancies that were not filled after an earlier exercise. 

This was done after 200 newly recruited teachers failed to report to their respective centres especially in the rural parts of the country.

Uniting against female genital mutilation in Africa

Female genital mutilation in Kenya, and Africa by extension, still remains one of the worst forms of violence against women. What’s even worse is the fact that this cruelty is being perpetrated on girls who are as young as five years.

Although there have been increased efforts to campaign against this vice, many girls and women in general continue to suffer in silence. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), at least 125 million females alive today across the world have undergone FGM. They further estimate that about 3 million girls are at risk of undergoing FGM every year.

I haven't had sex with my wife for a continuous period of seven years - Mozegater

Singer Mozegater has asked the Lusaka High Court to dissolve his marriage to Bernadette Jacinta Connaughton Mulenga on grounds that the couple had lived apart for a continuous period of seven years. 

In his divorce petition filed in the principal registry on Tuesday, Mozegater, whose real name is Justine Mulenga, stated that his wife lived in Ireland and that there was no love and affection between them. 

Train hits vehicle in Kitwe, Kabwe

The driver of the Toyota Ipsum cheated death after his vehicle was hit by a Zambia railways train at a level crossing. 

The crash happened in Kabwe this afternoon (yesterday). 

And according to Road Transport and safety Agency (RTSA) the driver had his headsets on and was listening to music and was eating at the same time.

Higher Education Minister Michael Kaingu in February announced in Parliament that government had abolished payment of meal allowances to students following student’s riots at the two institutions.

Youthful bride dies in accident a day after Kitchen party, days before Wedding

This is in a case in which a Mazhandu Family bus registration number ALP 5119 overturned at a place called Green Leaf on Monday afternoon leaving six people dead and several others injured.

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has commended Youth leaders from various political parties for setting the tone on issues agreed upon during Tuesday’s interparty meeting organized by the church.

Minister of energy and water development Dora Siliya has urged graduates to strive to compete to get ahead not to idle in same position or situation.

She says it's not how one starts but how one end that matters.

“I eavesdropped a conversation while in a restaurant. The young girl was telling some diners about how she graduated from university last summer and today was her first day at work in this particular restaurant.

“I thought about our many young people back home with dreams of a great job after university. Sometimes it does not turn out as we planned,” she says.
