CBU students protest, infuriates police

By Staff Reporter, Kitwe
The students of the Copperbelt University (CBU) in Kitwe, Riverside campus staged a protest otherwise known as ‘Jambo’ on Saturday, Independence Day - a move that infuriated Zambia Police.

The student protested so as to have their COBUSU President, Humphrey Mwenya and other students released from cells.

Mr. Mwenya and other students were arrested in the early hours of Saturdays for allegedly attempting to breach peace on Independence Day in Kitwe.

The impasse involving Ministry of Higher Education, CBU academicians and management prompted students to shun the Independence Day celebration alleging that there was no freedom in Zambia.

In pursuit of the culprits during the protest, police followed students and reached a far as E-Block among other hostels where one student got injured as he tried to escape tear gasses.

The Injured student is currently nursing serious injuries and has since been hospitalized at Kitwe Central Hospital.

At press time, WM Media Pty. Ltd confirmed that COBUSU Academic Secretary and Council Chairperson, Samuel Mumba and Tobias Makai respectively, were arrested together with other 9-students.

Meanwhile, academicians of the Copperbelt University have vowed to maintain a strike action until their demands are met, barely three months after they had taken a similar action.

The academicians are demanding that the incumbent Vice Chancellor, Prof. Naison Ngoma and top management be fired and with immediate, the Minister of Higher Education, Michael Kaingu should announce a new management. Image credit: DK
