Government has released K423.7 million for the construction of
students’ hostels at the Copperbelt University (CBU).
CBU has been grappling with accommodation challenges forcing
most students to look for rooms in boarding houses which are mostly in
a deplorable state.
Once the project is completed, an additional 3,200 beds will be created
at the university, which is located in Kitwe’s Riverside area.
Deputy Minister of Education Sydney Mushanga disclosed the
development in Kitwe yesterday when he paid a courtesy call on Kitwe
district commissioner Chanda Kabwe.
“About K650 million has been released for infrastructure development
and expansion of existing infrastructure in higher learning institutions
countrywide.
Just here on the Copperbelt, K423,734,693.70 has been given to the
Copperbelt University for the construction of students’ hostels,” Mr
Mushanga said.
He said the government will ensure that it mitigates the accommodation
challenges in higher learning institutions for the benefit of the students.
Mr Mushanga said Government wants to ensure infrastructure which is
being constructed in the education sector is of high quality for it to
stand the test of time.
He also said the government is sourcing for funds for first-year students
who will be offered bursaries.
Mr Mushanga said the government is concerned about the welfare of
students countrywide and it is for this reason it is working tirelessly to
source funds for students’ bursaries.
“As government, we are a parent. We want our first-year students to
start learning. We have engaged the Ministry of Finance to source funds
for students’ bursaries,” Mr Mushanga said.
He, however, said the government will not tolerate hooliganism among
students in institutions of higher learning. LT
