Riverside Ward Councilor in Kitwe Christopher Kang'ombe has said a Students Loans Authority is a sustainable way forward in supporting bursaries to GRZ students.
Mr Kang'ombe who is also a former student of the Copperbelt University says so far GRZ has not put in place any mechanism to recover the student loans.
“In 2004 when I was enrolling at the Copperbelt University, I was told to sign a form and agreement that the Government
of the Republic of Zambia was going to give me an education Loan for tuition, meal allowance and book allowance for 5
years. I graduated in 2009 and have been in employment since 2010. Unfortunately GRZ has not put in place any mechanism to recover the loan,” he says.
He says the complaints by those who get left out on the list for bursaries will continue unless GRZ creates a sustainable
pool of funds starting with recovering money from those who were sponsored starting from 2004 to date.
Mr Kang'ombe says the soon to be established Students' Loans Authority (SLA) must quickly implement the recovery plan and also identify various financial institutions to inject new funds for new students.
He adds, “as CBU re-opens for the 2015 academic year, I am appealing to the students to exercise patience as government works
modalities for supporting the smooth running of the institutions.”
