One of Zambia's cream institutions, The Copperbelt University is scheduled to open for 2015 academic year this April, alas chances are that the institution will open not as the calendar stipulates.
On Monday morning, a group led by COBUSU President, Humphrey Mwenya
staged a peaceful protest over the delay by the government to advertise invitations of applications for first year GRZ loan sponsorship.
In a statement, Mr Mwenya said there is no money available for both returning
students and first years.
“We shall not continue with the
current political hunduism being practiced by the government. As a union we were earlier informed that BC would be advertised last week however, this is not the case,.infact there is no money available for both returning students and first years. And government intends to ask for
a longer period of extension 6 weeks from the university through senate scheduled to take place anytime,” he said.
He added, “and as COBUSU we shall not allow this hunduism to continue, we have given government until tuesday to
advertise BC and give us a response to our calls.”
Mr Mwenya in his capacity has COBUSU has called for another peaceful protest on Wednesday.
“As President of the entire students
fraternity, for those at universities,yet to be born, wishing to access higher education, would like to call for an urgent peaceful protest meeting (GM) on wednesday 8 April 2015 at 08:00hours Kitwe Freedom Statue, city square,” he said.
He said all surrounding well meaning students with a future are expected to attend because our childrens to come will
question our cowardice for failure to stand up when it mattered the most.
“We shall not seat and watch, for the future destiny of this nation in whom is bestowed the ideals, aspirations,vision of our mothers,fathers and our childrens children to come depends upon us,”said Mr Mwenya.
