A British graduate who adopted a
somewhat unusual approach to find a job might have become an internet
sensation, but he wasn’t the first man to adopt the unconventional
strategy.
A photo of Ndumiso Sikhakhane, who has a building diploma, circulated
on social media when he decided to hold up a placard with his personal
information at a busy intersection in Sandton in northern Johannesburg in
early August.
Speaking to Eyewitness News, the 26-year-old said his contract at his
previous job came to an end in May.
Sikhakhane said his friends thought he was crazy when he told them about
his plan.
“I decided to act on my faith,” he said. “I didn’t want to go to the internet
cafĂ© and look for a job because everyone was doing that.”
After two days of standing with his board on the street, he was offered a
job in Durban.
“I’m enjoying my new job but most importantly, I’m loving the sea here.”
Sikhakhane said he was overwhelmed by the support he received from
South Africans of all races.
As for 22-year-old Alfred Ajani, who stood quietly at the Waterloo
Station during rush hour, he received interest from companies as far away
as New York.
Dressed in a suit and tie, he held up a page reading, “Marketing graduate,
BA Hons 2.1, Coventry University. Ask me for CV.”
