Over 850 University of Zambia (UNZA) students have been warned that they will not be allowed to write end of year examinations in August 2017 if they don't clear the outstanding balances.
A memorandum from the Vice-Chancellor issued in June stated that students owing the university will also not be allowed to attend classes or access any university services.
The memo put on several notice boards within campus along with the complete list of affected students also indicated that Lecturers should not to mark assignments and tests for students owing the university.
Meanwhile, former University of Zambia Student Union (UNZASU) President Antonio Mwanza has said the move taken by University management is extreme and counter-productive.
He said management must allow the affected students to attend class and sit for their exams.
“The University can withhold their results. Such a measure would give the affected students some time to look around for money,” Mr Mwanza said.
Mr Mwanza who is also Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) Spokesperson further said the university management ought to be conscience of the fact that times are hard and those are poor students coming from poor families.
“Blocking them from attending classes
and writing exams does not solve the problem. The best is to allow them to write the exams then withhold their results,
that way those students would have progressed and also would have been given some time to look for money,” he said.
Mr Mwanza has since wondered whether UNZA has a student's union or not.
“Where is UNZASU?” he asked.
