Ford launch 'Driving Skills for Life' programme in Zambia

By Winston Muleba Jr
Ford has launched a programme in Zambia dubbed Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) that aims at contributing towards the Zambian government’s campaign to improve road safety.

The programme is Ford’s global road safety initiative which has proved to be beneficial for all those who had the opportunity to participate in it.

DSFL is a free driving course aimed at improving the driving skills of participants and thereby contributing to the road safety campaign in each country in which it is offered.

Ford has introduced this programme in the country in conjunction with the local Ford distributor, Vehicle Centre Zambia.

The first training course took place in Zambia from 17 to 19 July 2017.

And Managing Director Susan Anderson at Vehicle Centre Zambia said this is the first time ford has rolled out such a programme in Zambia.

“We are pleased to bring this initiative to Zambia and proud that we, at Vehicle Centre Zambia in conjunction with Ford, are doing something constructive to assist in the promotion of improving driving skills in the country and so assisting in the drive to improve road safety in our country,” said Susan Anderson, Managing Director at Vehicle Centre Zambia.

Ms Anderson said Zambia is the seventh country in sub-Saharan Africa to benefit from DSFL, after the roll out of the programme in South Africa in 2014, followed by Angola in 2015 and Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya and Zimbabwe in 2016.

She said the initial programme started with one day of theoretical training followed by a day of practical training where trainers and dealer staff are involved.

The third day is spent training the local media representatives who are then able to spread the word through their various platforms.

Ford launched DSFL in the United States in 2003 and the system has been improved and adapted to suit local conditions in many global markets over the years. It is funded by the not-for-profit Ford Motor Company Fund as a proven and effective method of improving driving skills globally and so contributing to road safety.

The programme also addresses both the inexperience of young drivers as well as issues surrounding distracted driving, thereby, enhancing eco-driving to personal safety and the environment.
