Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ) Board Chairperson Rhidah Mung’omba has described the anti-tobacco campaign as a
threat to the tobacco sector.
Mr. Mung’omba says the initiators of the campaign did not look at tobacco in a broader angle, adding that this will
affect the economy of countries such as Malawi whose economy is highly dependent on tobacco farming.
And TBZ says more than four hundred people in Africa are directly supported by tobacco farming.
TBZ Chief Executive Officer James Kasongo says Zambian grown tobacco is among the crop that contributes highly to
foreign exchange globally.
Mr. Kasongo says ninety per cent of tobacco grown within the region is exported as green leaf.
He notes the need for people to invest in tobacco farming because it is more of a foreign exchange crop for Zambia and has the potential to boost the economy.
