Over 1, 000 vulnerable girls in Mungwi District are to benefit from the Keeping Girls in School programme under the Girl
Education and Women Empowerment Livelihood (GEWEL) initiative, it has been learnt.
ZANIS reports that Acting Mungwi District Community
Development Officer Sandra Sinkamba disclosed this in an
interview in Mungwi District today.
Ms. Sinkamba revealed that the 1,245 girls who have been
selected in the district will begin receiving school
sponsorship effective January, 2017.
Ms. Sinkamba disclosed the development during the District
Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) meeting held
at the council guest house.
The Keeping Girls in School programme is aimed at helping
girls from vulnerable homes to complete their secondary
school education.
The beneficiaries have been drawn from households that
are currently receiving the social cash transfer fund.
And Ms Sinkamba says her office has started identifying
women to benefit from the empowerment fund under
Women Empowerment Livelihood programme.
She said the women are being selected from registered
women clubs and will undergo training in income generating
activities before receiving the said funds.
Both the Girl Education and Women Empowerment
Livelihood GEWEL programme funded by the World Bank is
being implemented by the ministries of Gender, Education,
Community Development and Social Welfare.
The programme is currently in 16 districts countrywide while
Mungwi and Chilubi districts are the first beneficiaries in
Northern Province.
