Tales of farm visits: Negative effects of depriving chickens of clean water | WestMac Media

By Laban M Mwangi
It is arguably true that for birds to remain healthy, they require three basic needs namely; nutritious food, conducive shelter and clean water.
Most farmers understand the importance of providing poultry with nutritious feed and adequate shelter but they more often than not overlook the usefulness of making available clean water to birds.

Depriving birds of clean water has negative effect not only on their health but also on their egg production. Notably, the feed that birds consume makes it impossible for them to properly digest it without taking in significant amount of water.

It is worth noting that the different types of feed that poultry consumes such as; mash, crumbles and pellets do not have a lot of moisture. In order to digest these types of feed and get usable nutrients from the same, birds need water to soften and make them palatable. Going in line with this, failure to provide birds with clean water negatively affect their ability to digest food and this in turn adversely affects their health.

Moreover, birds regulate their body temperature through panting. By so doing, they in essence release water vapor through their mouths. This helps them stay cool at the expense of losing water from their bodies. This therefore means that for birds to regulate their body temperature using this process of panting then they need ample clean water.

Depriving birds of water can therefore put them under stress and this negatively affects their ability to lay eggs. If the birds are not able to regulate their body temperature through panting, they can also get a heat stroke and eventually die. In addition, clean water is quite important for poultry to lay eggs.

Remarkably, about 74% of an egg’s weight is contributed by water. This implies that for birds to lay eggs, they need clean water in plenty. It is therefore needless to overemphasize the fact that your birds are likely not to lay eggs if you deny them clean water.

If you want your poultry to be productive and be in good health then you must provide them with water that is both in the right quantity and quality. Feel free to contact us for professional advice on how you can manage your poultry’s water intake.
