The existence of a vacancy following the termination of the services of the former
Minister in charge of National Development Planning has compelled a 32-year-old economist to launch a campaign for appointment.
Herryman Moono says the aim of his campaign is to draw the attention of His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu and enlarge his selection pool for the Ministerial portfolio he is seeking
nomination for.
Moono says the campaign has continued to grow, and as with every process
questions and concerns are raised.
He says the key questions that many who don't know him have raised are: Who is Herryman Joe Moono? Where does he come from? What has he done? Why should His Excellency the President
of the Sovereign Republic of Zambia nominate him as Member of Parliament and appoint him as Minister of National Development Planning under his leadership?
“I thought I should briefly answer these questions so that those who don't know me may now know and have the confidence to
join the campaign to be part of Zambia's development and leadership trajectory.
Herryman Joe Moono is a 32 year Zambian applied economist who believes in the 'What Works' ideology,” says Moono.
Moono explains that he is a Rhodes Scholar, Class of 2009 and graduated from the University of Oxford , England [MSc Global Health
Science - with Distinction in Health Economics, 2011].
He adds that he also holds an MSc in Economics [With Distinction] from the
University of Sheffield, England, 2010 and a BA in Economics [With Distinction] from the University of Zambia, UNZA,
2008.
Moono says he is a native of Livingstone and went to Linda Secondary
School where he graduated top of his cohort in 2002 adding that he did his
primary and junior level education at Maramba and Libuyu Basic Schools in Libuyu compound, Livingstone.
He says professionally he has worked as an economist for the London School of Economics as Country Economist in charge of research on Industrialization under the International Growth Centre.
Moono adds that he also worked in
Zimbabwe under the Clinton Foundation as Health Care Financing Programme Manager with the Ministry of Health
in developing Zimbabwe's Health Care Financing policy.
He has also served as Regional Programme Manager - Sub Saharan Africa - for the German Friedrich Ebert Stiftung on
Social Protection.
In 2015, at the age of 29, Moono was overwhelming elected as National Secretary of the Economics Association of Zambia, a position he served until October 2017.
As a development consultant, Moono has conducted consultancies for UNICEF, UNIDO, SADC and ILO on an array
of economic development projects for the Zambian government.
He says he is an active economic analyst that has been featured in among others the 2017's 'The Business Year Magazine'; BBC Focus on Africa Business, Forbes Africa
Politics, Times of Zambia, Zambia Daily Mail, the New Vision, The Voice, and many other Newspapers.
He also provides
economic analysis on ZNBC, Diamond TV as well as both public and private radio stations.
Given his professional and academic background, Moono believes that being an armchair critic when one can be part of a solution is not solving problems, but
actually sustaining them.
Raised by a father who believed in
ideals of governance, he is passionate about being part of the solution to problems of development that each
country, Zambia included faces.
Having been part of the drafters of the 7th National Development Plan, and upon the existence of a vacancy following the termination of the services of the former
Minister in charge of National Development Planning, the “Moono for Minister campaign” was launched.
