The Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board has awarded student loans to 1,087 first year students at Mulungushi University for the 2022/2023 academic year.
Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board Senior Corporate Communications Officer Chiselwa Kawanda explains that the board received a total of 3,551 applications for sponsorship at Mulungushi University, out of which 3,448 applicants were eligible and 103 were ineligible for sponsorship, representing 97 percent and 3 percent, respectively.
Ms Kawanda says the ineligible applications are as a result of applicants completing grade 12 before 2018, non-attachment of required documents to the student loan applications and applicants being older than 24 years of age.
She says the board received a total of 9 applications from students living with disabilities, 6 male and 3 female, representing 0.3 percent of the total applicants.
Ms Kawanda further explains that of the 1,087 awarded students, 700 are from rural areas while 387 are from urban areas representing 64.4 percent and 35.6 percent, respectively.
