Join the fight against corruption, ACC urges youth

With corruption, our young people’s future remains bleak, says Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Southern Province regional manager Mweemba Mwape. 

According to The Post she said there was need to put up an intensive fight against corruption because the vice deprived youths in the country access to basic services such as health and education. 

Mobile NRC issuance overwhelming, Lusaka youths respond positively

Youths in Lusaka have overwhelmingly responded to the ongoing mobile issuance of national registration cards (NRC) with over 350 turning up at registration centres daily. 

An inspection of selected registration centres in Mandevu and Matero constituencies yesterday by Minister of Home Affairs Davies Mwila revealed that hundreds of young people are turning up to obtain NRCs.

At U.N summit, Obama reads a letter from a 15 year old Tanzanian girl

On the final day of the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit, President Barack Obama read out a letter from Eva, a 15 year old girl from rural Tanzania. 

Eva is part of Restless Development Tanzania's programmes, who worked with ONE to get her message read out by the President of the United States of America as the United Nations adopt the Sustainable Development Goals.

AfDB to increase funding to Zambia

Africa Development Bank (AfDB) is developing the next country strategy for Zambia that will result in the bank increasing its funding to various infrastructure projects in 2016-2020. 

AfDB designate country representative Damoni Kitabire said the bank which has been funding various infrastructure projects and financing Zambia’s private sector, has observed that the country has various infrastructure needs and will continue to support the country’s growth agenda.

Recently the media was reporting the untimely death of one of Zambia’s entertaining prophet, who died at the age of 29 in a brutal car wreck. It is very unfortunate that he lost his life at such a tender age, May his precious soul rest in perfect peace and it is very sad that his ministry has been cut short. It is very true that death is inevitable and consequently conquers all men regardless of their social or religious affiliation because to be alive means to expect a visit from death at some point, sooner or later all men are destined to die. 

Govt moves to protect Albinos, approves International Albinism Awareness Day

Government has moved to protect the rights of people living with albinism and has approved the recognition of 13th June as the International Albinism Awareness Day. 

At its 20th Cabinet meeting held on Monday at State House, Government said it had decided to recognize the International Albinism Awareness Day which is the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council resolutions on the attacks and discrimination of persons with albinism.

A new female condom that would probably win the innovative condom awards, if ever there were such awards has been unveiled in Uganda.

Govt committed to empowering communities with technological innovations

Government says it is committed to linking up communities with technological innovations by empowering them with knowledge imparted by institutions such as the National Technology Business Centre- NTBC to improve their innovations. 

Department of Science and Technology, Acting Director, Lackson Tonga observed that there is need to improve community development standards by elevating them with a different approach.

Prophet Emmanuel Nyirongo dies

Renowned Prophet from Kitwe Emmanuel Nyirongo has died in a road accident near Baluba along the Ndola – Kitwe dual carriageway. 

Prophet Nyirongo, 29, who was the President and Founder of Prophetic Faith Mission Church, met his fate this morning on his way from Lusaka to Kitwe and was expected to have a prophetic church service at his church in Kitwe. 

27 yr-old man to wed 70 yr-old ‘pregnant’ woman

A 27 year-old Ugandan man is reportedly set to marry his 70 year-old "lover" who claims to be pregnant with his child. 

The adage ‘Age ain’t nothing but a number’ has never been as relevant as now if the recent nuptials of Ugandan musician Guvnor Ace are anything to go by. Now, another young Ugandan man is also making news for pursuing a wife old enough to have have given birth to him – and possibly even given birth to his mother.

Kagem Mining to sponsor CBU and UNZA mining students, set up US$ 345,000 worth of scholarships

Kagem Mining has set up US$345,000 worth of scholarships for students to study mining at the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Copperbelt University (CBU) under an agreement signed this week. 

Minister of Education, Hon. Michael Kaingu; Minister of Mines, Energy and Water Development Hon. Christopher Yaluma and Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Fackson Shamenda were on hand to witness signing of the landmark memorandum of understanding at a ceremony in Lusaka on Friday (September 18).

UNZA scheduled to open in october

UNZA management says the institution will open on October 4 as scheduled following the lecturers’ agreement to release students’ examination results. 

The University of Zambia public relations manager Damaseke Chibale said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that following the agreement by lecturers to release the results, management will commence administrative work.

Airtel Zambia signs talent search MoU with FAZ

AIRTEL Networks Zambia and the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) yesterday signed a Talent Search memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth more than K4 million. 

At a signing ceremony, Airtel marketing director Sekou Barry said the Talent Search programme was to help identify and develop young footballers that will become the rising stars of the game and future players of the Zambia national soccer team.

Early marriages, pregnancies rate high in Samfya

Samfya district education board secretary (DEBS) George Mwangula says the number of girls dropping out of school due to pregnancies and early marriages is worrying. 

Mr Mwangula said from January this year, 93 girls have dropped out of school at Lubwa Secondary School in Samfya, due to pregnancies and early marriages.

Ugandan Students Create a Mobile App that can detect Vaginal Infections

Five students in Makere University Uganda have created a mobile application that detects vaginal bacteria. 

The mobile software is connected to a test kit known as, Her Health BVKit, which takes the readings from urine/Vaginal fluids and transmits to the app for diagnosis.

Developing children’s skills does not constitute child labour - MNCRD

Media Network on Child Rights and Development (MNCRD) has said that developing children’s skills does not constitute child labour and has urged parents and guardians to avoid mixing up the two concepts. 

Executive Director, Henry Kabwe said that there is need for this misconception to be clarified because the future of children will be compromised if they are not involved in chores that will help them in future.

The African Fact-Checking Awards were launched in 2014 by us at Africa Check and our partners, the AFP Foundation, the non-profit media training arm of the AFP news agency. They were created to honour the best investigative fact-checking carried out by African journalists each year. 

In the inaugural year, more than 40 media entries across 10 countries were received and were won by a team from Ghana, with runners-up from Kenya and Zambia.

LCM sends 1,200 miners on leave

Luanshya Copper Mines (LCM) has confirmed that 1, 200 miners at Baluba mine have been sent on forced leave while the attendant departments have been placed on care and maintenance. 

This comes a day after Government’s call not to send the miners on forced leave and place Baluba mine under care and maintenance. 

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Chishimba Kambwili warned at a press briefing on Monday that Government would not condone any threats by mining companies to lay off workers.

Lusaka’s youth converge for Street Culture Festival

Last weekend, a horde of Lusaka’s youths gathered at the NASDEC Sports Complex for the 12th triannual Street Culture Festival. 

The complex came alive as a centre of skateboarding, dancing, rap and art as the youths displayed their skills mainly exuding hip-hop street culture.

Amanda Wamunyima Crowned Ms. America 2016

Zambia’s Ambassador to the United States Palan Mulonda has congratulated Amanda Wamunyima for winning the prestigious title of Ms. America 2016 on Saturday 29th August 2015. 

In congratulating her Ambassador Mulonda noted that her success was a victory for Zambia as well. Ambassador Mulonda commended her for working tirelessly during her reign as Ms. Florida State 2015 to support causes in Zambia on disability.

American Rapper, Kanye West ‘to run for US president’ in 2020

American Rapper, Kanye West said that he is running for president in 2020 during his acceptance speech for the MTV Music Video Award’s lifetime achievement honor. 

West made the announcement at the end of a 10-minute speech where he discussed visiting the grocery store with his daughter and admitted that he does not understand awards shows. 

Govt approves to setup education loans institution

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, Chishimba Kambwili says government has approved the creation of the Education Loans Institution to replace the bursaries committee which was established through a statutory instrument, No. 182 of the 1973 Education Act of the Laws of Zambia to “administer bursaries, loans, scholarships and fellowships for tertiary education locally and abroad”.
