Ms. Fatuma is praised for her peace building and conflict resolution initiatives within the pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya. She and 16 other women are ‘women that are changing the world’.
In July 2014, Cordaid sponsored Ms. Fatuma to attend the Inclusive Security workshop in Nairobi. “The forum catapulted Ms. Fatuma’s recognition by the Institute of Inclusive Security, as the women’s powerful voice of peace among perennial inter-clan rivalry by Kenya’s
pastoralist communities”, says John Wairimi form Cordaid Kenya.
Ms Fatuma Abdulkadir Adan, dubbed by the Institute of Inclusive Security as ‘the forward’ in a team of women that change the lives of thousands of people around the globe, is a daughter of parents from two warring tribes in Northern Kenya. When she was a kid, her mother used to hide her under the bed when there were shootings.
Today she is an attorney and she fights for peace.
Kristin Williams of the Institute of Inclusive Security: “Seeing the cycles of division continue through generations, she decided to challenge the status quo via a universal language: sport. She says of her
youth soccer programs, which engage boys and girls from different areas:
“No blood is shed; only sweat. We tell the young people, ‘Shoot to score, not to kill!’” Through sport, Fatuma has found a channel to address sensitive issues, from female genital mutilation to child marriage.”
