Parliament has unanimously ratified the appointment of Irene Mambilima as Chief Justice following her nomination for the position by President Edgar Lungu. Justice Mambilima becomes the first female Chief Justice.
The motion to ratify Justice Mambilima was moved by Choma Central member of
Parliament Cornelius Mweetwa, who was the chairperson of the Parliamentary select
committee.
“The country has had no substantive chief
justice for the past three years and my
committee selected witnesses to make oral and written submissions after the President
nominated Ms Mambilima as Chief Justice,” he said.
He said Justice Mambilima is qualified for the position as she has been in the legal fraternity for over 39 years.
