According to a press statement issued by Amos Chanda, the Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations the Republican President Edgar Lungu has appointed the Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson, who is also Deputy Chief Justice, Ireen Mambilima as Chief Justice.
However, the appointment is in accordance with Article 93 of the Constitution of Zambia which stipulates that: “The Chief Justice and the Deputy Chief Justice shall, subject to ratification by the National Assembly, be appointed by the President.”
Meanwhile, the Outgoing Acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda will continue Acting as Chief Justice until such a time when National Assembly ractifies Justice Mambilima's appointment thereafter she will retire.
