Efforts are being made by individuals, private institutions and
governments to provide at least basic education to citizens.
With the advent of the Internet, however, everyone is moving onto the
Web, and so are our libraries, a major component of education. At the
click of a button, the Internet helps us get information and knowledge
from the comfort of our homes.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has made the eradication of
poverty, malaria, polio and the provision of basic education their topmost
agenda.
The latest initiative of the foundation is to provide the people of Botswana
with an e-library service. In order to reach the intended beneficiaries, they
have agreed with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture to provide free
Internet access through national libraries.
The e-library service, which will be rolled out through the National
Library Services Department, will be available in libraries across 13
towns and villages, including Gaborone, the capital. The service is
operated through Sesigo, Botswana's e-public libraries, a government
effort to get the public to access computers and the Internet in libraries.
