This year Zambia celebrates its 50th year of independence. Before and after independence finding a job has been a challenge.
Our parents keep sweet talking us that jobs were never a challenge years ago forgetting to think Zambia then had a very small population in that a good number were employed just after high school,colleges and University.
I wonder why every succeeding government wait upon investors to come and create jobs for Zambians and find it hard to empower young people who owns salon, barbershops, mechanic workshops,carpentry workshops,whole/ retail shops with capital to improve their business because these are the potential employers.
Every year CBU,MU,UNZA,CAVENDISH produces graduates who write dissertations in their final years of study .These dissertations provide solutions to various companies and economical challenges. On a sad note these dissertations are just shelved in libraries. This leaves so much to question,even consultancy opportunities are awarded to expatriates and not our own technocrats.
Imagine if small scale entrepreneurs,street vendors, kaponya's (call boys) were empowered were empowered with enough capital and their small businesses expanded to a level of employing 4 or 5 people.Don't you think many would at be working even if on a small salary?it has taken 50years for Zambia to have big companies Dangote Cement, Kalumbila Mine, Zambezi portland. Should we wait for another 50years to clock for us to have another big group of investors to invest in Zambia?As a country we are so much dependent on investors and yet we have potential investor who can create jobs on a broad scale if they are given support they deserve.
I therefore, feel youths should not wait for the government to create jobs for them instead they must start thinking of setting up their own enterprises and perhaps be employers.
