Sustainable farming requires a shift from traditional subsistence to
business oriented farm production, for the farmer to realize full benefits.
Agribusiness activity which does not end up in selling of the produce is a
failure.
Majority among farmers plant and grow crops without reference to the
market and expect to sell getting a rude shock. First and foremost, growers
need to match their production with peak periods for local and export
market.
The grower should target production for local market outlets during the dry
period when prices are likely to be high. On the other hand production for
export market should target the peak export period which starts from
October to May.
The farmer should therefore be conversant with the demand and supply
situation throughout the year. Every serious farmer should design a
planting calendar which is a very important tool for production planning,
as it guides farm operations. Haphazard planting should only be left for
jokers.
The grower should stagger production within the year for continuous
supply according to the market requirements. The farmer should always
take into consideration the basics of economics of production with regard
to when to grow, for whom and where to sell before growing any crop.
