Gender Minister Professor Nkandu Luo says Zambia has one of the highest rates of child marriages in the region especially in rural areas due to tradition, culture and
poverty levels among others.
Professor Nkandu Luo says her ministry has set up measures aimed at reinforcing efforts to end early marriages through working with traditional leaders and other stakeholders.
The Minister adds that there is need to realize the health and psychological implications associated with early
marriages especially in rural areas where these cases are dominate.
Professor Nkandu Luo says her ministry is currently working with the Ministry of Education to ensure that targeted girls
receive education that will enable them to become independent in life.
