Not only Pilots, unsung young heroes deserve equal recognition, coverage and support

By Staff Reporter, NDOLA
A Ndola based youth, Jayne Mwale has expressed concern on why only young Pilots receive recognition, support and media coverage against all professions in Zambia.

She suggests that equal recognition, coverage and support of professionals and non-professionals must be embraced.

“What's wrong with Zambians kanshi? Youngest female pilot! Youngest male pilot!

“Why not youngest Teacher, youngest Doctor, youngest Nurse, youngest Driver? Pantu fye nindeke, tufwe?” she lamented.

And a lot of people could not agree more with Ms. Mwale when she raised a concern on facebook about young pilots receiving praise every time and then.

Last year, Kalenga Kamwendo received praise and media coverage for having received a commercial pilot license at the age of 18-years. Prior to this time, he had obtained his private pilot’s license at the age of 17-years.

Late last year, another Pilot-a girl of Kitwe district, Makungo Mulando, received praise and media coverage at the Airport upon arriving in Zambia from her Pilot studies in South Africa. She was 18-years-old last year.

And just this month another pilot, Besa Mumba, 18, has been recognized, praised and covered by different media houses.

On average, in Zambia most pupils complete their secondary education at the age of 18 and beyond. And majority students graduate from colleges and universities at the age of 22-years and 23-years respectively.

It is very inspiring to see some young Zambians living their dreams especially at ages below 20-years.

A research conducted by this reporter shows that the aviation industry in Zambia is still in its infancy hence on course of supporting young people with interest in aviation related careers.

A research further reveals that in the last 48-years after independence, the aviation industry was dominated by old people and females were made to believe that besides Air Hostess, aviation careers were for males.

Besa, who is now a Commercial Pilot for Proflight Zambia says she is very excited to have joined Proflight crew of Pilots according to documentary produced by Langmead and bakers communications.

Besa adds that she doesn't feel intimidated when she is in the sky.

And speaking during the launch of the Women in Aviation Zambia chapters, Mrs Lungu commended women for breaking down barriers in male dominated professions.

She said women who have made strides in such sectors must be recognised and celebrated.

Mrs Lungu who also recognized the youngest Zambian female pilot Besa Mumba, urged young people to aim high in life.

And Besa thanked Mrs Lungu for the recognition.

However, the demand for equal recognition, coverage and support of all unsung heroes is still emphasized as this will motivate active young people to work hard in all professions.
