The University of Zambia (UNZA) has scooped first place at the just ended debate competition on Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR) held at the Rainbow Towers Hotel in Harare, Zimbabwe, the University of Zimbabwe emerged second while the Copperbelt University (CBU) emerged third.
This years’ Competition was hosted by Future Leaders Academy (FLA) in partnership with SAYWHAT as a preconference activity at the Southern African Regional Students and Youth Conference on sexual and reproductive health ( SARSYC).
The Future Leaders Academy (FLA) is a regional partnership stemming from the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender
‘Future Leaders @ Work’ programme at the University of Pretoria since 2005. It is supported by the Students’ and Academics’ International Assistance Fund (SAIH), Norway.
The focus of FLA is Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR) at universities in Southern Africa and beyond. It is a regional think tank on these issues and promotes the use of innovative training methodologies, open and free dialogue, on all SRHR related matters. It hosts the Imagined Futures Conference every two years as well as regional SRHR
debates, essay competitions and exchange programmes.
University students from 7 countries namely; Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland and
Zimbabwe competed for the top prize.
The 7 Southern Africa universities that represented the aforementioned counties included University of Botswana, University of Namibia, Copperbelt University, University of Zambia, University of Malawi, University of Pretoria, University of Swaziland and University of Zimbabwe respectively.
According to the judges, Chimpamba Mwansa and Evette Makaliki , both 3rd year students studying Adult Education and Public administration respectively debated objectively hence made UNZA win.
